This might be TMI, but I never bothered buying maternity underwear. In fact, I never even thought of it. But more than three years after giving birth, I’m learning that this was a big mistake. And I want to help you currently-pregnant people achieve the undergarment bliss that never happened for me.

It all started a few weeks ago when my sister, who’s in her second trimester and pregnant for the first time, sent me a link to SunnyBuy’s Women’s Maternity High Waist Underwear ($39 for five pairs on Amazon). She proceeded to share that she loved this underwear so much that she wanted to talk about it. A lot.

In a series of texts, here’s what she said:

“Pregnancy underwear is so underrated.”

“This underwear that I got is amazing. It feels like I’m not even wearing any, but in fact, it covers my entire stomach.”

“It’s thin and stretchy and so comfy.”

“I don’t think underwear should make you this happy.”

So, naturally, I had to check these undies out for myself to see what the hype was about. And as it turns out, my sis wasn’t the only one singing the praises of these pregnancy panties. They’ve racked up nearly 3,000 glowing Amazon reviews and have earned an average 4.5 out of 5-star rating.

Moms-to-be love that the bamboo-spandex fabric is soft and breathable, and the fact that the underwear is seamless means it doesn’t poke, dig or irritate their skin. “These feel like I’m not even wearing underwear! Such a relief from the constant rolling down of regular underwear,” one reviewer wrote. “I love these underwear because there is no seam on the side. I was having trouble with most maternity underwear [because] when I lay on my side, the seam would bother me, well not any more! I wish I bought these sooner!” wrote another.

But even though the fabric is soft, the over-the-belly cut still delivers solid support – think shapewear light. “These are great to wear under a dress or nightgown when you'd like a little support but you don't want to wear a maternity belt. Support-wise these are not super supportive but just the extra little bit takes pressure off my stomach and back,” one reviewer wrote.

Also very important: The stretchy fabric stays stretchy, so there’s no sagging after weeks (or months) of wear. Here’s how one enthusiastic wearer put it: “You know how under the belly undies fall over and over again? These don’t, at all. They actually help those ridiculous maternity pants stay up better as well.”

Best of all, these are what I would call accessible undies. At $39 for five pairs, they’re relatively affordable, and you don’t feel like you have to be too precious about tossing them in the wash or dryer. And the sizing is inclusive, going from medium to 3X. (But FYI, some moms-to-be said the undies run a little big and suggested sizing down.)

I really wish I had thought to look for underwear like this when I was pregnant, instead of just buying a bigger size of the underwear I wore pre-pregnancy and suffering silently through months of bunching, sagging and drooping. But alas, I can’t change the past. I can only spread the word in hopes of making your pregnancy underwear experience just a little more comfortable.
