Quick Summary
The best baby sound machine is the Hatch Rest, according to testers from the What to Expect staff and user community. Parents suggest looking for a baby sound machine that produces gentle sounds and is versatile and adjustable.
Your natural instinct might be to keep baby’s nursery as quiet as possible when he is fast asleep. But a little white noise or the low hum of an air purifier can actually help him fall and stay asleep. Not to mention those types of sound can help baby transition from living inside the relatively noisy womb to a quiet nursery. So if you’re hoping to make his bedtime routine a little easier, you may want to add a baby sound machines to your registry.
“White noise machines can be extremely useful in assisting babies with falling as well as staying asleep,” says Miami-based pediatrician Gary Kramer, M.D., a pediatrician in private practice in Coral Gables, Florida.
How we chose the best baby sound machines
The best sound machines for babies play soft noise, and are adjustable and versatile. To help narrow down your choices, we utilized feedback from What to Expect staff and community members on which sound machines they loved best and what features they most appreciated. Based on this information, we ensured that all the the sound machines selected met the following criteria:
Calming sound: Most baby sound machines offer at least one of three types of noise: White noise, which consists of high frequency sounds such as television static or a fan; brown noise, which consists of low-frequency sounds like thunder; and pink noise, a medium-frequency option like rain falling. “[These] soothing sounds block out other background noises in the household that could be disruptive,” Dr. Kramer says. Any of these three options are gentle and calming for baby, but some babies (and parents) might prefer one over the other.
Adjustability: Parents appreciate being able to control the volume level and sound options, as well as color for sound machines that double as night lights. Some additional adjustable features to look for are timers and options to sync with an app.
Portability: If you want a sound machine you can use both in baby’s room and on-the-go, you’ll be glad to know that most baby noise machines are pretty small. There are some, however, that are more compact and better designed for travel. You should also consider whether the machine is a battery-operated, plug-in or charging model, as that may impact your ability to take it anywhere.
Each of the baby sound machines on this list has received overwhelmingly positive reviews from What to Expect staff and community members for this criteria.

With more than 30,000 five-star reviews on Amazon, the Hatch Rest is a recurring favorite among parents, which explains why it won the Best Sleep Machine during the 2023 What to Expect Sleep Awards. This high-tech device is known for being incredibly customizable to best suit you and your baby. In fact, you can create custom sound-and-light combinations and save baby’s favorite for later.
“The ability to save sounds can be helpful for parents who want to create a different environment for night sleep versus napping,” says Leah Rocketto, Associate Commerce Director at What to Expect, who finds the feature to be easy and intuitive to use.
Sarah Darby, What to Expect's Senior SEO Strategist, also found creating custom combinations to be super useful, especially because it’s easy to accidentally cycle through all of the sounds when turning the machine on and off.
As far as sounds go, there are tons of options, including white noise, heartbeat and lullabies. As baby gets older, you can play bedtime stories on the Hatch Rest. You can also program specific colors to signal to your toddler that it’s time for bed, time to wake up or time for a nap.
The best part? Everything can be controlled through an app on your phone.
“The app is especially helpful if my mom or someone else is with the baby and struggling to turn it on,” says Leah. “I can just do it from my phone and all is well.”
Parents also love the look of the Hatch Rest so much that many buy them for other rooms in their home.
“...have been using the Hatch Rest 2nd gen with my 7 wk old. The main [functions] I use are the white noise and sleep stories. I use both of these things for sleep as an adult too (white noise machine to block out city noise and the calm app for sleep stories).”
“Our daughters both use a Hatch. My husband and I also use a Hatch. My parents and in-laws use a Hatch. Most adults I know use a sound machine of some sort. We love them!”
“I also love that I can set a light to come on for when it is wake up time to not come out of his room [too] early unless to pee or if he really needs mom or dad.”

The Dohm is described as a staple in many parents’ homes for so many reasons. Instead of digitally recreating sound, it actually has a fan built in inside to produce white noise that many parents say sounds natural and unobtrusive. Plus, it can impressively drown out almost all outside noises — whether it’s coming from the street or other areas of your home — which may be one of the reasons many parents love it in their own rooms, too.
“The fact that it uses a fan and not a low-quality recording played through a low-quality speaker makes a difference I think,” says Jamison Hermann, Senior Video Producer, who has two in his home.
Its straightforward design allows you to adjust the tone and volume by twisting the top and sides. Each opens or closes vents so you can modify the level depending on what helps baby sleep. Many parents in the What to Expect community say it has even lasted them for several years. One thing to note, however, is that it doesn’t have a timer, so you’ll have to manually turn it off if you don’t want it to play all night. It also doesn’t have a light.
The Munchkin projector and sound machine has ambient sounds, lullabies and pretty projected images to help lull baby to sleep. It comes with three sets of images: Soothing Seas, Calming Rainforest and Sleepy Sky. What to Expect parents appreciate that it comes with a timer so the projections won’t be on all night, as well as a built-in nightlight for late night feedings or comforting baby. Parents also like the options of sound, ranging from lullabies to ocean noise to Mozart.
“My LO loves his munchkin light projector sound machine. He watches it like it’s a mobile and falls asleep. I like the sounds there’s ocean, rain, white noise or a bunch of lullabies. it can be on very low and quiet or it can be loud. There’s lots of noise around my house and it drowns it out. There’s different pictures you can choose from and it’s got a timer or it can be on all night.”
“Munchkin one. You get a bunch of different sounds. Plays continuously or you can set a timer. It also has a projector. I had one for 3 years with no issues... love it!”
Power source: Battery-operated (Requires three AAA batteries, not included)
Timer: 15-, 30- and 45-minute auto-off timer
Sound options: 4

This compact device can help drown out background noise wherever you are. There’s even a convenient clip so you can easily attach it to your stroller or diaper bag. It runs on three AAA batteries, and although many parents say that it has a surprisingly long battery life, you’ll want to keep extras in your bag just in case. One reviewer says they used it 24/7 for over a week for a new puppy and it still had plenty of power left. Just remember: Never attach this device (or any other) to your baby’s crib. Not only would that make the sound levels unsafe, but attaching anything to a crib is a hazard, per the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
I use this one and like it a lot. It only [takes] 3 AAA batteries. I was surprised how long it lasted before I needed to change the batteries. It has been very helpful for overnight hotel stays.
Timer: Adjustable and hands-free for any time period
Sound options: Practically unlimited
Light: No

“I use an Amazon Echo Dot and I love it. You can ask Alexa to play white noise, nature sounds, lullabies, any music you want. It does so much more than a sound machine.”
“An echo dot (Alexa), connect to your phone and play a shhhh YouTube video…works like a charm lol I connect it to my old phone so I still have access to my phone and my alarm won’t disturb her sleep.”

FAQs
What is the safest sound level for baby?
The AAP advises that sound machines for babies be set no louder than 50 decibels, which is about the equivalent to the sound of a refrigerator running. To be sure that you’re below the 50 decibel level, you can use a free app like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s NIOSH Sound Level Meter, which allows you to measure noise levels using your phone. Once he starts snoozing, however, the AAP advises that you turn off the sound machine, as there’s a small risk of hearing damage from the constant noise.
Are sound machines recommended for babies?
Because babies are used to constant background noise from being in the womb, a baby white noise machine can help mimic the same gentle sounds to help them fall asleep.
Is it OK to use a sound machine for newborns?
Yes! In fact, many of these products are labeled as “infant sound machines” because they are particularly helpful for fussy newborns.
Where do I place a baby sound machine in the nursery?
According to the AAP, you should ensure your baby sound machine is at least seven feet away from your baby’s crib.
