As you inch closer to your third trimester, you may find some sex positions and angles physically challenging. Sex toys, however, could make pregnancy sex much more comfortable and enjoyable.
“One of the most common causes of discomfort is a penis hitting the cervix at certain angles,” says Staci Tanouye, M.D., an OB/GYN in private practice in Jacksonville, Florida. Penetrative sex, like Dr. Tanouye describes, may be too intense for your sensitive cervix or it may be hard for partners to find an angle that’s not painful. Using a toy is a great way to have more control during sex, especially because many come with adjustable speeds and vibrations while others can be used externally and on other parts of the body.
But are sex toys safe to use during pregnancy? Luckily, most sex toys that you would have used prior to becoming pregnant are safe for your vagina and cervix as long as they do not cause you additional pain, says Dr. Tanouye. Finding the one that’s right for you — whether you plan to use it solo, with a partner or both ways — is what matters most.
How we chose the best pregnancy-safe sex toys
We spoke to three OB/GYNs: Dr. Tanouye, Lisa M. Valle, D.O., OB/GYN and medical director of Oasis Women’s Sexual Function Center in Santa Monica, California and Sherry A. Ross, M.D., OB/GYN and women’s health expert in Santa Monica, California, in order to learn more about how to have comfortable sex during pregnancy and what types of toys to look for that are safe to use. Per their guidance, all of the products on this list are made from non-porous materials, like silicone, to avoid infection or other harm during pregnancy.
We considered feedback from the What to Expect community members on their experience using sex toys during pregnancy to determine which toys were most comfortable, pleasurable and easiest to use during pregnancy.
Other factors to consider
Sex toys should be made of safe materials and should be comfortable for your body whether you’re pregnant or not. But here’s what else to look for when shopping for pregnancy-safe sex toys:
Material: Porous materials, such as jade or other stones, could harbor infection-causing bacteria or have sharp edges that may cause injury to a sensitive vulva. Pregnancy sex toys should be made of non-porous materials like silicone in order to ensure that they are as safe as possible.
Adjustability: Because pregnancy-related discomfort during sex is common, the ability to adjust the depth of penetration is important. Adjustability of a number of vibration settings is also a key feature in battery-powered toys for sensitivity during pregnancy. Additionally, having a toy with a hands-free option can add more comfort as your body changes throughout pregnancy.
Type of stimulation: Some sex toys can be used in the vagina, while others are means to be used externally on the clitoris and vulva. The latter of which you may find best if penetration is uncomfortable or not advised by your doctor during a high-risk pregnancy. There are also toys with up to 20 vibration settings, but not all toys involve vibration, which could be overstimulating if your vulva and clitoris are especially sensitive due to increased blood flow during pregnancy.
Easy to clean: Particularly during pregnancy, the vulva can be more sensitive to irritation, so it’s important to thoroughly clean all toys after use. Silicone sex toys, because they are non-porous, tend to be simple to clean with a toy cleaning spray or alcohol to eliminate bacteria.
Can you use sex toys during pregnancy?
Yes, but the type of toy may vary depending on your pregnancy. For example, if your doctor has advised you to avoid penetration due to certain high-risk conditions (such as placenta previa), you should opt for toys that provide external stimulation, like wand vibrators or clitoral stimulators.
How do I safely use sex toys during pregnancy?
There are a few things to consider before using sex toys during pregnancy. Dr. Valle recommends not penetrating too deeply, especially if you're using a rigid sex toy, because the cervix can be sensitive during pregnancy and bleed. Dr. Tanouye adds that, “adding lube can always be helpful, so you don’t cause irritation to the vagina.”
Cleaning is also an essential step in using a sex toy in general, but especially during pregnancy. Dr. Valle recommends cleaning sex toys with soap and water prior to use or following the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
If you have a high-risk pregnancy or pregnancy complications, however, check with your doctor before testing out a new toy or type of stimulation. Also, if you experience any type of pain or bleeding, discontinue use of a toy and contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Lovehoney Frolic 10 Function Silicone G-Spot Vibrator

- Compact and portable

If you’re getting close to your due date and aren’t up for your favorite sex positions, you can incorporate the Lovehoney Frolic G-Spot Vibrator for internal stimulation (and you can get your partner involved, too). People love that it’s highly customizable with up to 10 modes of varying speeds and vibrations. This makes it easy to modify the toy to match your sensitivity levels throughout pregnancy.
Parents in our community call it “pure gold” from a pleasure standpoint. They also say the curved, short body of this toy makes it easy and comfortable to insert internally.
The Lovehoney Frolic is also waterproof for shower or bath play, and is the perfect handheld size to pack in your babymoon bag along with a bottle of cleaner. Plus, at a $30 price tag, it allows you to get the most possible bang for your buck.

Best Rabbit Vibrator
Fifty Shades of Grey Greedy Girl G-Spot Rabbit Vibrator

- Allows for external and internal stimulation
- easy to clean
- Higher price point
An external vibrator that also has an internal stimulation option can be your best friend, especially in pregnancy, notes Dr. Ross. “Vibrators can stimulate the clitoris in ways that make achieving an orgasm much easier and faster,” she says. “Vibrators are an efficient and effective way of masturbating when you are looking for ‘me’ time.”
This Fifty Shades of Grey rabbit vibrator is especially popular because of its smooth, rounded silicone tip and pair of bunny ears that sit at the perfect spot for clitoral stimulation. It can be used with a partner or without, and has the option of internal and external penetration. The toy sits flat in case you want to experiment with hands-free play, which is ideal for the third trimester. What also makes this rabbit vibrator a great pick is how adjustable it is, with up to 12 different settings on the main shaft and three on the rabbit portion.
One parent in our community remarked that they purchased this exact vibrator and recommended it to another parent looking for a fast-acting toy to use on late nights when they’re tired after a long day or their partner falls asleep watching TV.
And because it’s made of non-porous silicone, it’s a breeze to clean with a spritz of toy cleaning spray, alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide when you’re done.

Batteries required: Rechargeable via USB cable

Best Suction Vibrator
Womanizer Starlet 3 Clitoral Sucking Vibrator

- Gentle stimulation
- waterproof
- safe for those with a sensitive cervix during penetration
- May not be enough stimulation for those looking for deeper penetration
The Womanizer device uses gentle suction and stimulation that is meant to increase blood flow and sensitivity, explains Dr. Valle. “Many women experience increased sexual desire and arousal during pregnancy,” she says. “However, some women experience decreased sexual desire and arousal. This is meant for the latter.”
This medical-grade silicone Womanizer Clitorial Sucking Vibrator is solely an external toy and does not involve penetration, making it a non-issue when it comes to cervical sensitivity during pregnancy. (That said, you should always check with your doctor if unusual pain does arise while using this or any toy). The six different levels of the intensity allow you to adjust the suction to your comfort level, which can be particularly beneficial for those experiencing increased clitoral sensitivity during pregnancy. You can also increase the speed and intensity at your own rate.
Multiple parents in our community call this type of vibrator “life-changing” during pregnancy and used it well past pregnancy, too. Many also said they found that it brought them to orgasm quickly and could comfortably be used alone or with their partner.
Material: Silicone
Batteries required: 1 lithium ion battery
Hands-free: No
Modes: 6
Best Bullet Vibrator
Cooxer Remote Control Bullet Vibrator

- Rechargeable
- waterproof
- quiet
- can be used internally or externally
- has remote control for hands-free use
- Takes a long time to charge
- simplistic design
There are so many things you can do with the silicone Cooxer Bullet Vibrator — use it externally for clitoral or breast stimulation, use it internally or use it on a partner. (If you’re swapping it in between bodies, be sure to clean it thoroughly with soap and water or a disinfectant.)
It’s quiet if you’re into discreet “me time” and has about an hour and a half of use before it typically needs a charge. And, what makes it an especially impressive bullet vibrator is that it has a remote control. This can make it extra comfortable to use on your own while laying down on your back or side — a plus if you’re experiencing pain or soreness — or can add a fun, playful dynamic to partnered sex.
One parent in our community specifically recommends a 10-speed bullet like this model, which is a plus if you like to switch in between settings during use until you find one that’s most comfortable for you.
Material: Silicone
Batteries required: Rechargeable with USB cable
Hands-free: Yes
Modes: 10
Best Dildo
Adam’s Silicone Dildo

- Suction cup attachment allows for hands-free use
- can be used with a partner with a harness
- No vibration settings
- could be too large and uncomfortable for those with a sensitive cervix to insert
If you want to keep it simple, you can opt for a silicone dildo like this option from Adam & Eve. It’s not only made from non-porous, latex-free silicone, a material reviewers found more comfortable compared to a glass dildo. It also has a suction cup base that can be applied to any surface for hands-free enjoyment. Although it doesn’t come with any customizable settings like the other picks on this list, it could be preferable for those who are too sensitive to withstand vibrations.
This dildo is also compatible with harnesses if your partner prefers to use it as a strap-on, or if you want more flexibility in the bedroom with your toys. Lube is strongly recommended because it’s insertable up to 7.5 inches, and you may want to take it slow depending on how your body feels.
Material: Silicone
Batteries required: None
Hands-free: Yes
Modes: None
Best Massage Wand
Mini Halo The Original Compact Power Wand Massager

- Compact for travel
- flexible head can be used in many locations
- has many vibration settings
- Could be too small if you’re used to a larger wand
- not designed for penetration
Talk about a vibrator with benefits! The Shibari wand massager has an impressive 20 different adjustable pulsation settings and eight speeds to accommodate the varying sensitivity of the clitoris during pregnancy. It’s also made out of high-grade silicone with a cushioned massage head for extra comfort.
Although you can certainly use this massaging head for clitorial stimulation, you can also use it for massage purposes outside of the bedroom, including massaging your sore neck, shoulders and lower back. (Obviously give it a good clean if it’s been used internally.) This versatility might be especially welcome to soothe sore areas during pregnancy, especially your back. You can also take this externally stimulating vibrator for a spin on your own, with a partner, or use it on your partner anytime, just about anywhere on the body.
Material: Silicone
Batteries required: 1 lithium polymer battery, included
Hands-free: No
Modes: 20
Best for Partner Play
Ohnut Ring Set

- Helps control depth of penetration for minimizing cervical discomfort or bleeding
- can be used on toys or strap-ons
- waterproof
- Doesn’t involve vibration
The Ohnut Ring Set is more of a tool than a toy, but it can help facilitate more comfortable sex during pregnancy, which is the goal here. Dr. Tanouye suggests using these soft, stretchy rings by placing them around the base of the penis, toy, or dildo to control the depth of insertion. “OhNut rings are stackable and additive to customize the amount of cushion one might need for comfort,” she says. “In certain positions, this could be very helpful during pregnancy.”
Amazon reviewers find it to be a relief, adding some cushion for anyone concerned about hitting the cervix during penetrative sex. Others remark that it made sex less painful for them. Beyond pregnancy, the product can be used postpartum, especially because your body will be sore for several weeks after birth, or can be used by anyone with endometriosis and anyone who has pain during sex in general.
Material: Polymer blend
Batteries required: No
Hands-free: No
Modes: N/a
